Ightham, Kent – a village steeped in history …….
Ightham is one of the many delightful Wealden villages in ‘The Garden of England’. Nestled in the foothills of the North Downs, the village Square with its mediaeval half-timbered houses and historic pubs still reflects a century’s old rural existence.
The historic village pubs, the ‘Chequers’ and the ‘George and Dragon’, have long been dispensing hospitality in their heavily beamed snugs to villagers and visitors alike. Excellent food can be found in both hostelries, so why not pause and enjoy their friendly welcome before exploring further.
Wander up from the Square to the church of St Peter’s. This has been the focus for village worship since the 12th century. Memorable for its outstanding monuments, the most famous is that of Dame Dorothy Selby, a fine needlewoman with an intriguing local legend as one of the discoverers of the Gunpowder Plot.
Ightham Mote is one of the village’s great houses. Now National Trust owned, Ightham Mote is the most complete small mediaeval manor house in Kent. Every visit to Ightham should include an exploration of this moated gem, whose atmosphere reflects 650 years of history.
Surrounded by Kentish apple and cherry orchards, cobnut plats and hop farms, Ightham is situated within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Spring bluebells and fruit blossom, misty Autumn landscapes and snowy Downland fields, ensure that a visit to Ightham in any season will always be a peaceful retreat.
